Group Structure

Learn to Swim

There is a waiting list to join this section. It is advisable to enrol at an early stage (3 years old: however children will only be admitted when they reach 5 years). Children are taught to swim with good stroke technique and are then introduced to the Improvers.

This group is made up from swimmers promoted from the learn to swim section and from childrem accepted adter trial swims. There are several groups of Improvers. Swimmers are promoted through the groups at the discretion of the teaching and coaching staff.

Squad swimmers are the elite of the club. Squad swimmers compete at every level, from inter-club competitions to County, London Region and National Age Group Competitions.

The Masters section is comprised of swimmers over the age of 18 years. The majority of master swimmers have all been ex-swimming club members who have opted to continue competitive swimming. there is no upper age limit.

Teacher/Coach : Swimmer Ratios

The B.G.S.S.C operates within Teacher/Coach : Swimmer ratios as recommended by the A.S.A. in the “Safe supervision in Swimming Pools” document i.e. 1 : 12 for beginners, 1 : 20 for improvers, and 1 : 30 for squad swimmers.

However, the club appreciates that a higher ratio of teachers/coaches to swimmers will enable more performance feedback and regulation.

Likely teacher/coach ratios based on average attendance figures are as follows:

Swimmer ratio for Learn to Swim is    1 : 6

Swimmer ratio for Improvers is   1 : 8

Swimmer ratio for the Pre & Development Squad is   1 : 8

Swimmer ratio for the Squad    1 : 12
